The “Little Herder” series

November 5, 2011

There is a short series of bilingual readers that was published sometime ago. I’ve had Little Herder in Winter listed on my site for awhile now. I thought it was a little strange to have this reader with that particular title. In the back of my mind I thought there should be others.

There are!

Little Herder in Spring
Little Herder in Autumn

There is a Summer version, but I can’t seem to find a link for a copy. I found a complete copy of the entire series, BUT it is in English only.  It would be fun to read with, or to, children; but I like the language learning benefit of the bilingual text.

One more thing, the Winter book is a .pdf file…so it can be downloaded. The Spring and Autumn books are available to view but cannot be downloaded as a whole. The HathiTrust Digital Library does allow a page at a time to be downloaded as a .pdf file. Just click on the Download PDF-This Page link, and it should open in another window. So if you have the patience, you could get the entire book and merge the files together with some Adobe software.

This series is part of a larger collection of similar bilingual readers; all the ones I know about were authored by the same Ann Clark, and sponsored by the US Bureau of Indian Affairs. They would find Native writers to work with Clark to create the bilingual text; I wonder what Clark’s background was.

OK, there was no excuse for wondering … this is the Internet, after all, and Ann Clark has a nice little Wikipedia article about her: apparently she had a long career writing books for Native audiences, mostly schoolkids.

I own one of these that is bilingual in English and Lakota, called “There Still Are Buffalo”.

Native Child, a company that develops supplemental curriculum material for Diné classrooms and schools, has republished all four Herder books in their original bilingual format. The covers have been colorized, yet the contents is identical to the ones published in the 40ies. You can purchase a hard copy or download an electronic book version here: or go to and go to the store from the main page.
