Navajo Words of Interest
I have decided to use my Twitter and Facebook pages a little more often. It is good to keep everyone aware of my latest blog post, but reading the actual post requires time to read. Twitter and Facebook are good at spreading ideas and information in small chunks…so I am going to start spreading around some little chunks of knowledge every now and then.
I like the idea of posting a Navajo Word-of-the-Day, but I don’t have the time dedication to do that daily. But in that spirit, I will post some words I come across in the dictionary that I find interesting and helpful for our understanding and study of the language. I have one example that led me to consider doing this. I came across the Navajo word for “bean”, which was followed by the word “pea”. The word for “pea” is equivalent to bean… but adds the adjective ROUND on the end. Interesting, right? That’s what a “pea” is, right? A round bean.
So subscribe to my Twitter feed or Facebook page to keep up-to-date. I can’t bring myself to actually write a blog post for every little thing I want to share with everyone, this helps me keep the blog from becoming cluttered. If you do not have a Twitter account, follow on Facebook or you can also view my Twitter feed in the right hand margin. I would pay attention to that feed. I sometimes have questions, relevant news feeds, and I’ve also added a few job posts for Navajo speakers.
If anyone else finds a word they want to share please post a comment or tweet it with @NavajoNow.
what is the Navajo word for THINKING OR DREAMING, thanks! Carol
Have no idea. Post a comment at the Navajo Language Renaissance Facebook page, they’re pretty quick to respond. Navajo Language Academy will probably work too.
